Green Lavender Bath Soak - Bath Blend of the Month

This lovely bath soak features lavender leaves and other fresh green herbs from your garden, such as mint, rosemary, sage, thyme, or plantain.

Green Lavender Bath Soak

Blend equal parts of fresh chopped green herbs in any combination you want, and Epsom salt in a mini food processor.

Spread the green colored salt over a sheet of wax paper and allow to air dry for a day or two, then crumble or re-blend the mix to an even texture.

If desired, stir in 1 to 2 tablespoons of baking soda, to help soften the water, and a few drops of lavender essential oil, for scent.

Add a half batch, or the whole amount, into a comfortably warm bath while the water is running.

For easier cleanup, pour the bath soak into a muslin tea bag or old sock before adding to the tub.

Moonlit Comfort Soak - Bath Blend of the Month

Here's a calming, nurturing Cancer Zodiac Bath Blend that reflects Cancer’s deep emotional sensitivity, love of comfort, and connection to water. Cancer is ruled by the Moon, which governs tides, intuition, and the home—so this bath soak is all about soothing the senses and creating a cocoon of self-care.

♋ Cancer Zodiac Bath Blend

Moonlit Comfort Soak

For emotional balance, relaxation, and heart-centered restoration

  • 1/4 cup chamomile flowers (calming, soothing for skin and spirit)
  • 1/4 cup lemon balm (uplifting and gentle; helps ease anxiety)
  • 2 Tbsp rose petals (emotional heart support, self-love)
  • 1 Tbsp lavender buds (relaxing and comforting)
  • 1/4 cup Epsom salt (muscle-relaxing and energetically grounding)
  • 1/4 cup sea salt (cleansing and detoxifying)
  • Optional: 3–5 drops chamomile or rose essential oil, added just before bath time (never directly to dry herbs for long-term storage)

Mix all dry ingredients in a large bowl. Store in an airtight jar.

To Use: For each bath, scoop about 1/2 cup of the blend into a muslin bag, tea infuser, or directly into the tub (if you're okay with a bit of floating flora). Fill your tub with warm water, add the herbal blend, and let it steep for a few minutes before getting in. Soak for at least 20 minutes, ideally with candlelight or moonlight for the full Cancer effect.

Tip for Cancer Energy:

For extra comfort, pair your soak with soft music, a cup of warm tea made with Backyard Patch Cancer Herb Blend, and journaling or meditation to honor the nurturing, intuitive self.

Exfoliating Salt Scrub - Bath Blend of the Month

The low humidity in winter air depletes the moisture in your skin. This leaves the uppermost skin cells without enough moisture to keep them healthy. The result is itching, peeling and scaling of dead skin. First I suggest increasing the humidity in the air of your home. Simmering spices on the stove add moisture and freshen a room with delightful aromatherapy scents. Use a glycerin or olive oil base soap because they have fewer chemicals and are less drying. Next, remove dead skin cells by exfoliating with a textured soap or a salt scrub. Make your own salt scrub with my favorite recipe. Your skin will feel great and be soft and supple!

Exfoliating Salt Scrub

  • 1 cup fine grind sea salt
  • 1 cup almond or avocado oil
  • 30 drops lavender essential oil
  • 30 drops lemongrass oil

Combine salt and oil in a bowl, Stir in lavender essential oil for stress relief and lemongrass oil for invigorating the mind.

TO USE: After bathing while skin is still wet and you are still in the tub, use one tablespoon to gently massage skin. Avoid sensitive areas. Rinse well. Pat dry and lock in moisture with your favorite body lotion. Lavender lotion will effectively heal and moisturize dry winter skin.

Pampering Bath Salts - Bath Blend of the Month

May is when I get out and really get working in the garden.  I am looking forward to planting, bringing my scented geraniums outside after winter, cleaning out my perennial beds and so forth.  Although I did a lot of walking this winter to keep myself in shape, those first few weeks always result in some stiff muscles from overwork.

For the bath blend this month I chose to craft something that I can use to soothe my muscles, but also pamper my skin.  It uses the soothing and pampering of Epsom salts and baking soda, bringing it to a whole new level by using combinations of different herbs. You need 3/4 cup of herbs, but you can make your own combination depending on what your skin needs.

Here are a list of great bath herbs and why they are helpful

Lavender – is balancing, will calm or rejuvenate depending on your need and what you blend it with

Lemon Balm – an infusion strained into the bath make for happy thoughts.

Roman Chamomile – is soporific, aiding sleep and relaxation

Bergamot - stimulates, brightens the skin and helps blood flow

Rosemary – lightly astringent; stimulates rejuvenates and promotes elimination of waste

Sage
– purifying, restores skin tone

Rose – deeply healing

Geranium – deeply healing

Lemon peel – is antiviral and anti-bacterial

Pampering Bath Salts

1 1/2 cups Epsom salts
3/4 cup baking soda
3/4 cup herbs (well crumbled and not whole leaf)

Blend the herbs and salts together and store in airtight plastic containers or sterilized jars (such as mason jars or small & pretty jam jars). Shake the jar well before using. You can place these in gift jars to make a great gift, just include contents and directions on a pretty tag.

To use: Toss in as little or as much as desired into the water. The average amount is about 1/4 cup. If you do not wish to chase herbs around the tub, place the measured amount into a cloth bag, square of fabric or even a coffee filter tied closed.

Gingerroot Bath - Bath Blend of the Month

The unfortunate thing about April is it can be cold or hot here in the Midwest, so this bath blend will warm you up if your April is not a sunny and warm as you would like. I shared this recipe about a decade ago on the blog, but since ginger is the herb of the year, I thought I would share it again with an update. You can grow your own ginger or you can just buy a root at the local grocery.  I buy mine and wrap in plastic wrap and place in a bag in the freezer.  Then when I want ginger for a recipe or a bath mixture I just pull it out and grate it.  It might be harder to slice when frozen but grating is easy.

pixabay photo

Fresh gingerroot has a sweet, spicy fragrance that is also a mild stimulant. Used in the bath, it promotes circulation and is perfect on a cold day to warm both your body and your senses.

FRESH GINGERROOT DETOX BATH

Yield: enough for one bath

  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • 1/2 cup Epsom salts or sea salt
  • 2 tablespoons grated gingerroot
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar

Mix together all ingredients and pour into a clean container.

To use: Pour entire mixture into the bath as you fill the tub, stir well, and soak for 15 to 20 minutes. After bathing, dress warmly, as this bath is super cleansing and really opens up all your pores. If you are experiencing dry skin, use this time to add a moisturizer that will be more easily absorbed.

Holiday Bath Salts - Bath Blend of the Month

We do not make many bath items at Backyard Patch Herbs anymore.  Twenty-five years ago, when I first started I made Dill Dip Mix, Italian Dressing Mix, 6 herbal teas and a Scented Bath Salt recipe.  As I learned more about herbs and experimented with my herbal harvests I crafted an explosion of items for cooking, tea and bath, numbering more than 250 products.

The variety of things you can create for the bath are massive.  The number of recipes I was maintaining and creating became a monster that I could not even display at a show because there was not enough room.  After serious consideration, I decided that those recipes would be retired from my catalog and I would instead share them here monthly instead.  If you have a favorite bath items you need me to make, you can always message me or speak to me at a show and I can make them special, but you will no longer find them on my websites once the current inventory is sold. We reserve the right to bring a few favorites back for the holidays, however.

This month's bath recipes of the month are two that I developed when my General Scented Bath Salts became "boring" to make.  Both of these are great for helping skin and soothing nerves during the winter season.

herbed bath salts in a snowflake decorated tin

Restorative Bath Salts

The combination of essential oils in the blend is designed to relax and restore, not only the skin and muscles, but the mind as well.  When days get shorter and stresses increase sometime the body just needs a bit of help with rejuvenation, These salts are perfect for that.

  • ½ cup Epsom salts
  • ½ cup sea salt
  • 1 cup baking soda
  • 15 drops frankincense oil
  • 15 drops lavender oil
  • 10 drops bergamot oil
  • 10 drops rose geranium oil

Combine dry ingredients in a bowl and add essential oils by the drop.  Stir well to combine and remove the essential oils lumps so the scent is evenly distributed into the base salts.  Once they are combined transfer to a jar with a tight fitting lid.

TO USE: Add 4 Tablespoons of salts while filling the tub.  You can also use 2 Tablespoons for a foot soak.

Warming Winter Bath Salts

The combination of essential oils are scents that are good for men and women.  You can make it into a soaking salt or you can add grapeseed oil and make it into a salt scrub to use in both the shower and bath.  Just add enough grapeseed oil to cover the salts and the scoop out by the handful to use as a scrub.

  •  1 cup Epsom
  •   1 cup baking soda
  •   30 drops sandalwood oil
  •   10 drops sweet orange oil
  •   5 drops ginger oil
  •   3 drops patchouli oil

Combine dry ingredients in a bowl and add essential oils by the drop.  Stir well to combine and remove the essential oils lumps so the scent is evenly distributed into the base salts.  Once they are combined transfer to a jar with a tight fitting lid.

TO USE: Add 4 Tablespoons of salts while filling the tub.  You can also use 2 Tablespoons for a foot soak.

OPTIONAL: Add grapeseed oil to cover the salts once added to the jar and then scoop out one handful at a time in the bath or shower and use to scrub away the rough patches on elbows, knees and feet. Inhale the scents while you work to help soothe stress. Rinse thoroughly, both your and the shower to avoid falls.

Scented Cleansing Bath Salts - Bath Blend of the Month

This combination of salts and essential oils makes a blend that is uplifting in scent and cleansing in nature.  It is a perfect blend to take the edge off your day and give you a pick-me-up as the days get shorter.

Scented Bath Salts – a cleansing formula

  • 1/3 cup Epsom salts
  • 1/3 cup sea salt
  • 1/3 cup baking soda

    •   6 drops grapefruit essential oil

Candy Cane Bath Salts - Bath Blend of the Month

This is a great last minute gift, and it is also fun to make with kids as you layer the salts to make a perfect candy cane swirl.

Candy Cane Bath Salts

2 cups Epsom salt

2 cups sea salt

1 cup baking soda

red rose petals

beet powder

spearmint and peppermint (optional) essential oil

Mix the salts and baking soda together and divide evenly between 2 bowls.  In one bowl add up to 3 drops of peppermint essential oil.  In the other bowl add enough crushed red rose petals and beet powder to make the salt pinkish red.  You will probably need about 1/4 cup each of rose petals and beet powder.  Add more for a deeper color and more contrast in your final product.  Then add 15 to 20 drops of spearmint essential oil.  Spearmint essential oil is much milder than peppermint.  The roses mixed in with mint has an amazing smell.

Creating the Candy Cane Effect

Now for the fun part, layering the bath salts!  Take a bag or a jar and place one color of salt in the bottom.  Make sure the salt is level and hold the jar or bag steady.  Then add the other color of salt to create a layer, or candy cane stripe.  Repeat until your container is full.   I enjoy making this bath with kids because of the pattern that appears when the kids layer the salts.  They really enjoy watching the candy cane form.  It is fun if you tilt the jar as you add the salts to create a diagonal look.

To USE:

Add 2 Tablespoon salts to bath water as you fill the tub.  Swirl to dissolve.  To avoid a ring of rose petals, measure the salts into a muslin bag, tea ball or coffee filter and float in the bath swirling to dissolve the salts.

New Moon Herbal Salt Detox Bath - Bath Blend of the Month

The time of the lunar cycle when the Moon goes dark — not visible in the sky at all — is known as a New Moon.  This is the perfect opportunity to discard things in your life you do not want.
2015 NASA photo
The day of the New Moon — the day before and the day after also — is a fortunate, rejuvenating time.
It is a time for:
+renewal
+making positive changes
+turning inward
+clearing false perceptions
+tapping into our inner knowing
+embracing fresh opportunities
+ a time to set new intentions
+ also a wonderful time for cleansing

Because at the time of the New Moon (as well as the Full Moon) our body’s capacity for detoxification and toxin removal is at its best. Just like the oceans’ tides — that ebb and flow with the electromagnetic effects of the Moon — our bodies are comprised mostly of water and are also naturally affected by this lunar influence.
One of the vital elements to cleansing with the New Moon, is the detox bath. And today I want to share a recipe for renewal on the New Moon. It’s a wonderful way to increase the energy on the night of the New Moon and/or the day(s) before and after.  The New Mon is set of Dec. 7th
New Moon Herbal Salt Detox Bath
Makes: three (3) large tea bags
2 tablespoons dead sea salts
2 tablespoons Himalayan pink salt
1 tablespoon calendula flowers
1 tablespoon lavender flowers
1 tablespoon lemon balm
1 tablespoon rose petals
1 tablespoon jasmine flowers
essential oils of lavender (3 drops), jasmine (2 drops), and rose absolute (4 drops), optional (for a more budget-friendly option, simply use lavender)

Directions: Add all ingredients to a quart-sized glass jar. Place lid and shake gently until well combined. Allow jar to sit overnight Measure 1/4 cup of mixture into a draw-string muslin bag or one large tea bag and seal with the use of a household iron or as recommended. Store tea bags in a glass jar or brown kraft bag.
Best Bath Procedures:
1.      Prepare a hot bath.
2.      Add one bath tea bag to the tub.
3.      Dry brush the skin while waiting 2-3 minutes for the bath infusion to prepare
4.      Bathe for 20-30 minutes.

Oatmeal Floral Deluxe Milk Bath - Monthly Bath Blend

October is a month where your skin starts to dry out.  The heat may be on in the hime, the sun screen is not liberally applied anymore, and because it is no longer hot you are drinking less water and your skin begins to dry out.

Bath sachets (also known as bath tea) make a lovely, luxurious soak that can be beneficial to skin, ease stress and help soothe aches and pains. These steep in the tub, making a luxurious soak. If some tender therapy is needed to ease sore feet, you can try these as a foot soak instead.

Obtain a drawstring pouch or make a bag out of cheesecloth, organza, terry cloth or muslin, large enough to hold anywhere from 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup of this herbal mix. Tie them tightly shut so the loose ingredients won’t float out. After use the contents can be emptied, the pouches rinsed out then washed to be refilled and reused.

These amounts will make a batch at a time to be stored in an airtight container until needed.

Oatmeal Floral Deluxe Milk Bath
1/2 cup powdered milk
1/2 cup Epsom salt
1/8 cup baking soda
2 Tbls cornstarch
1 cup oatmeal
1/2 cup lavender

Preparation:
Fill the bag with a 1/4 to 1/2 cup of the Sachet Blend. Two ways these can be enjoyed, either hang them on the tap while the hot water is running, making sure the water is running through them. Once the tub is filled, let them float around.  Or the Infusion Method: Boil a quart of water, turn off heat, add pouch, cover, then steep (for at least 20 minutes for best results). Add the piping hot infusion (and the bag) to a full tub, being careful while pouring to avoid burning yourself.
Note: Do not steep in an aluminum pot.

How Tuesday Citrus Bath Bomb - Monthly Bath Recipe

Thought I would make this months bath recipe a how to, both because it is a Tuesday, but also it is getting close to gifting season and you can make these to give as gifts this fall.  They are great for a hostess, a family member, friend, teacher or anyone else who works hard for you (including you!)

To make them gift-able, wrap in colored cellophane or package in a glass jar.

How to - Citrus Bath Bombs

Mix together 1 cup baking soda,1/2 cup citric acid (I get mine through the mail - Etsy, Amazon, Mountain Rose Herbs, etc) 1/2 cup corn starch in a large bowl. Work out the clumps with your hands or a wooden spoon.

Now add in the 1/2 cup Epson salts and mix to combine.

You will need to use your hands to work in the Vitamin E as it easily clumps in the powdered ingredients.  This is a skin enricher and makes the bath bomb soothing to your skin.

Add some fragrance if you choose.  100% pure essential oil is best, add it by the drop and mix in carefully so it does not clump all in one place. You need to add at least 60 drops, but can add up to 120 drops depending on how strong you want the scent.

Here are a few choices and the benefits so you can decide what works for you:
     Grapefruit - anti-inflammatory and stress-fighter
Eucalyptus - reduces inflammation, helps respiratory issues
Lavender - anti-inflammatory, relaxing, reduces anxiety, improve brain function
Lemon - rejuvenate energy, improve skin
Lemon Balm - anti-inflammatory, skin health promoting, antibiotic
Lemon Grass - reduces inflammation, repels bugs, fights bacteria
Orange - decreasing wrinkles, easing anxiety, increasing circulation
     Rosemary - anti-oxidant, improves memory
Thyme - increases circulation, balances hormones, kills germs

Now comes the tricky park.  You want to bombs to stick together, but if you add water they will fizz now and not later when you add them to the bath. So instead you use a spray bottle filled with Witch Hazel.  Spritz the mixture in the bowl a couple of times, then mix with your hands to get the moisture worked into the dry ingredients.

Spritz again.  Mix again.  Continue this process until the mixture clumps in your fist.

Now it is ready to be pressed into the molds.

Allow to dry in the mold for 24 to 48 hours depending on humidity, then unmold.  Store in a tightly sealed jar to hold back moisture.

TO USE: Add one bomb to bath water after tub is full.  Slip into the water and enjoy the fizzy joy and aroma.

Bath Bomb Recipe

 1 Cup Baking Soda
 1/2 Cup Citric Acid
 1/2 Cup Corn Starch
 1/2 Cup Coarse Epsom Salt
 1 1/2 Tablespoons Vitamin E Oil (3 droppers full)
5 to 7 mL Essential oil of your choice (Skin safe fragrance)
 Witch Hazel as needed

Directions:
1. Measure out the Baking Soda, Citric Acid and Corn Starch and pour into the bowl. Work the powders to remove any clumps.
2. Add the Coarse Epsom Salt to the powders and mix until combined.
3. Add the Vitamin E Oil to the dry ingredients and mix using your hands until there are no more clumps.
4. Add Essential Oil and mix until well incorporated.
5. Spray the mix with Witch Hazel (between 10 and 15 sprays, 2 at a time.) Mix in with your hands until the mixture clumps in your fist.
6. Press your mixture into a silicone mold as tightly as you can.
7. Allow to set over night.
8. Remove from molds and enjoy a nice relaxing fizzing bath.

Calendula and Rose Sea salt - Bath Blend of the Month

Last moth I suggested a Calendula Tea for the bath.  You can also make a soothing blend of softening herbs and sea salt that includes calendula.

Calendula and Rose Sea Salt
Rose petals
Rosemary
Calendula petal
½ cup sea salt

Directions:
Combine all the ingredients together.  The amount of flowers and herbs is up to you, the more the merrier.  Place them all in a jar with a tight-fitting lid and shape well.  Allow them to meld for two weeks before using.

To Use: Place a large handful of the mixture in a muslin bag and place in a filling bath.  Soak and enjoy.

Rose is soothing to skin and calendula will relieve dry itching and irritated skin. Rosemary is lightly astringent and is rejuvenating and stimulating.

Bath Blend of the Month - Healing Salt Blend

This recipe contains baking soda which is used to cleanse and detoxify the body, and a blend of essential oils that are known for their cold-symptom-helping qualities. Since January is the height of flu season I thought this blend might be just what you need, especially after a stressful holiday season.

Healing Salt Bath Blend
  • 1 cup Epsom salts
    1 cup sea salt
    1 cup baking soda

    25 drops eucalyptus essential oil
    17 drops lavender essential oil
10 drops tea tree essential oil
10 drops pine or cedar essential oil
    5 drops peppermint essential oil
Directions:Measure out the salts and mix them together well, making sure to break up any clumps. I find that a large, wide, stainless steel bowl works best for blending the salts. Add the essential oils. Mix everything together well. Scoop the salts into jars or other air-tight containers.

Note: The essential oil blend is pretty flexible. If you don't have one of the oils, you can leave them out, or sometimes even substitute. The eucalyptus is the main part of the blend. The lavender is there to round it out a bit and give a bit of "relaxing" quality. Tea tree is a great anti-bacterial and anti-viral. Pine and peppermint are used for loosening up your nasal passages.

To Use: Add 4 to 6 Tablespoons to a running bath and soak away your symptoms.

Lavender Oat Sachets - Bath Blend of the Month

Lavender Oatmeal Sachet
2 cups plain old fashioned oats
1 tablespoon dried lavender buds
2 tsp. chamomile flowers
1/2 cup baking soda
small muslin bags

Combine all of the ingredients in a blender or a food processor and pulse until the mixture looks like flour.

Fill each muslin bag with the mixture and tie shut. If you don’t have muslin bags, you can simply add about 1/3 cup to a hot bath, under running water.  I prefer using a muslin bag to hold homemade bath soaks because it cuts down on clean up time.

This blend can be stored in a glass jar and just fill the muslin bag as needed.  When done, just dump out the contents and rinse the bag out to dry for next time.

We currently make these as a product of Backyard Patch Herbs, so you can get 5 draw-string tea bags of this mixture in a colored canning jar.
